Introduction - Primary and specialized service for dental in- and outpatients

1. History

The theoretical and practical teaching of stomatology started at the Medical Faculty of the István Tisza University of Debrecen, opened in the autumn of 1914, in the second term of the 1934/35 academic year. The opening ceremony of the Department of Stomatology, which was located in the wing of the Clinic of Ophthalmology, took place on November 30, 1940. The self-contained building intended for patient care and dentistry training and today housed in the old wing of the Faculty, was inaugurated in 1981. Since 2003 patient care has been coordinated by the Faculty of Dentistry.

2. Main areas of care and medical specialties

As a result of recent developments, we have at our disposal the diagnostic and treatment equipment, instruments, tools, and techniques that are necessary today for most up-to-date patient care in Europe. All this completes the development process aimed at making the University of Debrecen a priority centre of regional patient care in Hungary. In addition to regional specialized care (oral surgery, orthodontics, and dental radiology), our institution wishes to cover the entire field of dentistry by providing national-level specialized care (paying particular attention to patients with systemic diseases). In addition to patient care, the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen places great emphasis on dentistry training and research.

In 2013 a new treatment room was developed at our Institution for adult and pediatric patients requiring specialist care, which is unique in the region. The treatment room is equipped with state-of-the-art dental tools and instruments, enabling our specialized professional staff to perform dental and dentoalveolar surgical procedures under general anesthesia, if needed. Patients requiring specialist care mainly include patients unable to cooperate due to their moderate to severe or severe mental impairment; in this treatment room they can receive restorative dental treatments including cavity filling, caries removal, and root canal treatment in particularly justified cases.

In addition to patient care, our institution also focuses on providing practical training to dental students and supporting scientific research work.
