Introduction - Oncology, Oncotherapy and Rehabilitation Division

The Oncological Care Facility of Hajdú- Bihar County headed by Dr. András Molnár started its activities in 1952, then a few years later, from 1957 an inpatient department of the County Hospital provided the background for the treatment of cancer patients. In 1963 the “radium operating room” was opened as the most modern such unit at the time, where mainly gynecological cancer patients were treated.

In 1979 Dr. Éva Romhányi was appointed to serve as the Head of the Department, who expanded the range of professional options and besides isotope treatments she also introduced pharmacological therapy in the treatment of adult cancer patients.   Today the “radium operating room” is a thing of the past, but the cancer patients’ options for active oncological treatment, rehabilitation and care are constantly expanding due to the professional advances of the age.  In August 2011 the division was moved to a new location where all our wards have separate bathrooms and have been renovated.

The number of cancer patients is increasing year by year but as the results of drug studies in the past 5-10 years suggest, the chances of recovery are also improving. We provide about 2,000 chemotherapy treatments a year, one third of which is done in the form of inpatient care, and two thirds on an outpatient basis, which means that patients can sleep at home, thus spending the most time possible with their family, in a familiar environment. This is extremely important for patients receiving palliative care following the operation, who will recover in a couple of weeks and can leave behind all the nightmares of cancer. We do our best to make the time patients spend at the ward as comfortable as possible and minimize their sense of being ill.
