Electrophysiology - EMG-ENG
EMG and ENG examinations test the muscles and the nerves. Electroneurography (ENG) can map nerve conduction parameters thus facilitating the assessment of nerve root damages induced by polyneuropathy, neuritis, nerve compression syndromes and herniated discs.
The examination is painless although some patients may find the electric stimuli used to excite the nerves unpleasant. Electromyography (EMG) examinations are used to examine defects of the muscles. A thin needle is inserted into the muscle with which the spontaneous activity of the muscles and the activity during mobilization of the muscles can be measured. The test can help decide whether the disease is that of the muscle itself, or a secondary disorder in the background of which there is some neural damage.
EMG tests may also help detect myositis. As the needle needs to be stabbed into the muscle the examination is unpleasant and causes pain. Repeated muscle stimulation tests are used to examine myasthenia gravis (pathological muscle weakness). Some single-fiber EMG tests are also carried out at our clinic to confirm the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.
