Breath test specialty clinic
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Debrecen has introduced new rules of procedure affecting 13C-urea breath tests used for the detection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. As the urea breath test is an aerosol-generating procedure representing a significant infectious risk, the Department recommends that stool antigen tests be used instead for the detection of H. pylori infection, to ensure patient safety and risk reduction. International literature confirms that the sensitivity and specificity of non-invasive H. pylori tests like the urea breath test and the quick tests used for the detection of antigens in stools are similar.
Starting from 1 July 2020, the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Debrecen performs stool antigen quick tests and not 13C-urea breath tests for the detection of (H. pylori) infection. The container with stools samples should be sent to the central Samples Drop-Off Point in IVDI.
