Ultrasound 1 - Arterial ultrasound

Informations

The color-doppler examination provides information about the different vascular structures (arteries and veins) as well as the circulatory conditions of each organ. It can be used to examine the arteries and veins of the lower and upper extremities, the carotid arteries (such as the carotid and vertebral arteries - cerebral arteries), and the abdominal vessels (kidneys, liver, spleen, abdominal aorta). Stenosis and occlusion of different vascular sections can be detected. In case of certain diseases and tumors, the blood supply to the affected tissues may change, which may be lesion and provide useful information to the surgeon in case of surgery. The examination shows the course of the large arteries of the neck, abdomen and limbs, the thickness of the wall, the size and composition of the deposits on the inner surface. The flow rate can be measured at different sections of the vessel. The examination measures the flow rate in the area of the vascular sections using the ultrasound device based on the Doppler principle. The ultrasound probe emits high-frequency sound waves that are inaudible to the human ear. Some of the sound waves are reflected and scattered from different surfaces, others are absorbed. The reflected waves, like the radar, are detected by the probe and converted into electrical signals from which the device produces an image on a monitor. Most devices today are not only suitable for the examination of a single part of the body, but for different examinations operating at different frequencies other shapes and sizes of probes may be required. The blood vessels of the neck, abdominal organs and limbs can also be examined. Patients expose their neck or part of their body, undresses, and then lies on their back. Their skin will be lubricated with a gelatinous gel that helps the ultrasound waves to propagate. The probe is placed on the skin and pressed slightly into it. The doctor moves the probe to form a picture of different areas of the blood vessels. Preparation is not usually required, but it is successful if the patient come with empty stomach. It is usually advisable to eat last 4-6 hours before the examination. However, the patient can take their regular medications with a sip of water, which does not interfere with the examination. The measured stenosis only means the probable percentage. If vascular surgery is required, vascular staining should also be performed. It is harmless, painless which can be performed any number of times.
