During working hours acute care patients are referred to the heart surgeon by doctors of the cardiology ward (ward doctor, leading medical specialist at the ambulatory unit), who decide on transferring the patients.
After working hours, at weekends and on bank holidays the anesthesiologist on duty will notify the heart surgeon on call about the referral or arrival of an acute patient. .
