Introduction - Infection Control Service

In accordance with professional and legal regulations, it covers all activities concerning inpatient and outpatient care that deal with healthcare related infections, and the prevention, liquidation and investigation of imported and evolved epidemics

Infection control covers all activities of the institution that deal with the prevention, liquidation and investigation of hospital infections (central sterilization, disinfection, hygienic supervision and consultancy, clinical infection control). Its activity is based on effective laws, regulations of specialized authorities, medical guidelines, protocols and methodologies. This includes the prevention of the nosocomial pathogens and the control of infections brought to the hospital from outside. It ensures the protection of the patients, healthcare professionals and visitors from hospital infections. The treatment of the infection also influences pathogens and the clinical conditions triggered (selection of multiresistant pathogens), therefore, antibiotic therapy is also part of infection control.

Infection control is necessary, since

  • the patients and the healthcare professionals must be protected from preventable hospital infections;
  • hospital infections increase the number of days spent at the hospital;
  • they increase the mortality rate;
  • hospital infections trigger additional costs to the hospitals;

Outcomes of infection control for the patients:

  • lower hospital infection rate
  • higher survival rates
  • shorter hospital stay
  • faster recovery

Infection control focuses especially on those fields of infections that are of key significance from the point of view of epidemiology. With continuous data collection and the epidemiological processing thereof, it monitors the frequency of hospital infections and based on these data, it takes measures to reduce the number of hospital infections.
Infection control services include the coordination of the decubitus cases in the institution, the management of intelligent bandages and the documentation of the above.
Infection control is managed by a person having sufficient experience and this person monitors the public health and epidemiological status of the institution, makes reports about these for the senior management and the appropriate public health authorities.
The professional supervision of the infection control services shall be exercised by the following persons and authorities:

  • Head physician in charge of the division
