1. History
The Department of Internal Medicine, founded in 1921, is currently functioning in four buildings of the Centre. The University leadership, the community of internal medicine clinics and leading specialists in each field of internal medicine have recognized that it was timely and necessary to establish a single Institute of Internal Medicine, an integrated Internal Medicine Clinic, which can also function as an umbrella organization.
As a result of organizational changes, parallelism was eliminated, and previously missing fields could develop independently. In terms of the size of the clinic and the number of specialists and senior lecturers, the Department of Internal Medicine is the largest organizational unit of internal medicine in Hungary.
2. Main areas of patient care and medical specialties
General care in internal medicine is provided in buildings A, B and C of the Clinic based on areas of competence. According to the profile of the individual buildings and departments, it is possible to provide advanced specialized care covering the entire profession at the regional or even national level.
- Building "A": Metabolic, Endocrine and Kidney Diseases
- Building "B": Gastroenterological, hematological diseases, bone marrow transplantation
- Building "C": Immunological, rheumatic and vascular diseases (angiology), geriatrics
- Building "D": Rheumatic and autoimmune diseases
3. Types of medical care services
The treatment of patients with rare diseases whose illness affects up to 5 out of 10,000 people is considered to be a special area of care. The examination and treatment of such patients is carried out nationally by our department.
Special diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available at the specialist level, including liver, bone marrow, kidney and thyroid gland sampling and all gastroenterological (endoscopic) examinations. Chronic hemodialysis is performed in a separate building and organ replacement treatments are provided our Intensive Care Unit. The scale of available examination options is increasing continuously.
4. Data related to patient care
The Institute of Internal Medicine, which is also an Internal Medicine Clinic, serves specialized, individualized patient care. 171 graduates, among them 163 doctors and 251 nurses provide healthcare on 338 ward beds and 34 intensive care beds. The annual inpatient number is over 18,000 people, while 160,000 patients visit our outpatient and specialist outpatient clinics annually.
5. Technology and development projects
Laboratory samples are sent to the laboratory using a modern pneumatic tube system. Traditional X-rays, ultrasound and CT are located inside the main building.
Thanks to a 2012 TIOP grant, the comfort level of the wards has been improved greatly and an 11-meter-wide hallway with a café has been constructed to connect the previously separate buildings A and B.
Uniquely in Hungary, organ replacement modalities (hemodialysis, liver support procedure, selective apheresis, LDL-apheresis, immuno-absorption treatments) and the treatment of sepsis with cytokine-binding columns are carried out in our new Intensive Care Unit on 25 beds with the most advanced patient monitoring systems and methods available. Bone marrow transplantation and clinical cell therapy have also been introduced.
