Introduction - Pathology

At the Pathology Institute of the University of Debrecen histopathological and pathoanatomical examinations have been provided for almost 100 years at the highest standard of the time.

The institute, along with the other traditional academic subjects, is located at the ‘academic square’. Our institute was renovated completely both inside and outside in 2011.

Within patient care we perform more than 28,000 histopathological sample examinations, 4,500 lung, thyroid and gynecological cytology assessments a year, 6,000 molecular tumor pathology examinations and process 2,400 patho-anatomical cases.

In the area of aspirational cytological surgery about 500 patients are examined a year.

Besides general histopathological work our renal, lung and hemopathological activities are also acknowledged. Our diagnostic activities are facilitated by skilled assistants and up-to-date, automatized laboratories.

We take part in the work of different decision-making teams dealing with tumorous illnesses. We offer consultations on a regional level as well as provide educational and research tasks within the area of pathology. In connection with the above detailed medical work, we apply online laboratory control supporting diagnostic activities with the help of permanent quality assurance as well as international and internal validation.

Traditionally, the most capacity is needed for teaching pathology to 3rd-year medical students and also coordinating the education of students in dentistry, medical imaging diagnostic analytics, physiotherapy programs. Our participation in English-language tuition-paying medical training during the 3rd year is also very intensive.

In the graduate medical program the Institute of Laboratory Medicine and the Institute of Pathology offers an elective course titled ‘Problem Based Learning’. The head of the Pathology program at the Faculty of Medicine is the head of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Gábor Méhes.
