The Department provides outpatient care, but its focus is primarily on inpatient care. Treatment for hospitalized patients is available in the form of acute or chronic care.
Acute care consists of the specialty treatment of patients with skin diseases and the complex medical therapy and nursing of burned patients. To treat them, the dermatology unit provides 15 beds, dermatoimmunology provides 10 beds, and 15 beds are provided by the dermatooncological unit.
Care for burn patients is provided at a separate location by a separate staff at the Burns and Dermatosurgical Unit with 25 beds + 4 beds for intensive care, where we provide 15 beds for burn surgery and 10 beds for reconstructive plastic surgery for the optimal use of infrastructure and human resources.
The Department of Dermatology closely cooperates with the rehabilitation unit of the Division of Medical Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, and it can provide care for chronic patients on 4 beds.
Inpatient care for hospitalized patients is located on the first floor of the building in 24 wards. Our wards are equipped with 1-6 beds and most rooms have have their separate sanitary facilities.
Consulting rooms for outpatient specialist practices are found downstairs. These specialist practices were primarily formed according to the demands of the following subspecialties:
- Allergology, immunology: numerous new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been introduced: own serum test, Atopy patch test, immunoblot technique, lymphocyte transformation test, prick test, drug provocation test, epicutane test, full diagnostics and desensitization of insecticide allergy. Besides, our Department is one of the 10 centres where biological therapy is available for severe, therapy-resistant psoriasis.
- Dermatosurgery, dermatooncology, burns aftercare: The diagnosis of skin tumors, the identification of premalignant and malignant lesions, surgical care, adjuvant therapy and nursing for operated tumor patients requires real teamwork, it is a complex activity that covers several medical disciplines and requires the cooperation of dermatologists, surgeons, plastic surgeons and oncologists. Same-day surgery has also been introduced for applicable cases. Traditionally, in Debrecen the care and aftercare of burned patients are among the responsibilities of The Department of Dermatology.
- Care for Melanoma malignum: The increasing number of patients with skin tumors is a worldwide phenomenon, and our country is no exception to this. Melanoma patients are treated at the melanoma specialist practice and at the inpatient care unit. Though medical examination and therapy are provided by the Dermatology Department, it is supported by the full consensus of the ’onco team’. Close follow-up care is also provided here. One of the 7 selected melanoma centres of the country operates at our Department. In these centres patients receive immunotherapy which has revolutionized melanoma treatment.
- Photodermatology: Photodermatology has been a defining profile of the Department for about 40 years. Modern diagnosis and care for patients with photosensitive dermatosis are available at this specialist practice.
- Wound care: Care for chronic wounds is a significant and difficult task. Eight percent of the population is affected by this disease. Established at the Department in 1992, the phlebology specialist practice provides care for chronic wounds of venous origin. For local wound care we apply wet wound treatment. As part of a complex treatment besides local wound care patients receive lymph drainage therapy performed by a qualified physiotherapist proficient in lymphology.
- Dermatological infectology: Treatment for mycology and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is an integral part of the Department’s healing and preventive work. Through sampling, its procession, evaluation, and the selection of personalized treatment methods we have achieved remarkable results with patients from various areas of the country.
- Aesthetic dermatology: Today aesthetic procedures show the most dynamic development within the fields of dermatology. Paid patient care has been introduced to meet the demands for cosmetology services. There is an Nd:YAG machine (1064, 532 nm), an IPL and an ablative Er:YAG laser machine. The unit also performs a wide spectrum of popular procedures (Botox, peeling, fillings, and minor surgeries).
