Introduction - Neurosurgery Clinic

1.    History

Kálmán Sántha established the Neurosurgery Clinic and the first actual surgery was performed in 1949. The Neurology and Psychiatry Clinic was responsible for neurosurgical procedures for decades and the Neurosurgery Clinic became independent on February 1, 1987.

2.    Main areas of care and medical specialties

As a regional center, the clinic provides neurosurgical services in an area with a population of one and a half million. The whole spectrum of brain and spine surgical procedures are available here for adults, infants, and children. The clinic participates in graduate and post-graduate education, as well as the training of specialists. It is a powerhouse of scholarship, research, domestic and international collaborations, academic activities, and doctoral programs.

3.    Types of medical care and services

In addition to basic neurosurgical procedures, the clinic also performs special surgeries, including:

  • Surgeries for complex tumors
  • Pediatric neurosurgery
  • Treatment of vascular malformations both with open surgery or endovascular procedures (aneurysms, AV-malformations, AV-fistulas, cavernomas)
  • Complex spine surgeries
  • Gamma radiological surgeries
  • Endoscopies
  • Functional neurosurgical procedures (treatment of movement disorders with deep brain stimulation, treatment of pain syndromes with stimulation, treatment of spasticity with selective dorsal rhizotomy or with medicine pumps implanted under the skin, complex surgeries for epilepsy)

We are the only center for gamma radiological surgery and our pediatric neurosurgical unit is outstanding both in quality and numbers. The latter activity is performed in collaboration with the Pediatric Clinic. Our outpatient departments see a lot of patients daily as well. Our electrophysiological specialists are trained to recognize disorders with peripheral nerve damage and treat those surgically. We also provide care for patients from abroad.

We have our own neuro-intensive care unit and a dedicated team of neuro-anesthesiologists who improve the safety of surgeries and post-operative treatments.

4.    Data related to patient care

In addition to daily outpatient services, we have 33 beds for general treatments of inpatients and 8 beds in the neuro-intensive care unit. We perform approximately 2,000 surgeries annually and nearly 400 gamma radiological procedures. The treatment of malignant tumors is led by a team of neuro-oncologists, with the participation of other related fields.

5.    Technology and development projects

High-quality specialty surgeries are performed with the help of numerous devices, thus we have the essential technological background for cutting-edge neurosurgery. We have several excellent surgical microscopes, neuronavigation, intraoperative CT, ultrasonic tissue ablation (CUSA) for the removal of tumors, intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring to boost the safety of surgeries, and we have the technology for endoscopies as well.
