1. History
The Pediatrics Clinic in Debrecen is the leading pediatric institution in eastern Hungary, it has been providing outpatient and inpatient care for the region since 1924. Hospitalized patients are treated in the Main Building and in the pavilions of the Department.
2. Main areas of care, medical specialties
The department serves as a centre for medical education, treatment and research for both the Northern Great Plain and Northern Hungary regions. Children with any diseases may receive care as the department’s activities cover the entire spectrum of Pediatrics. Besides general diagnostic and therapeutic methods, modern procedures are also performed that are acknowledge internationally as well.
The Division of General Pediatrics provides treatment for diseases of the heart and the kidney, gastrointestinal diseases, and for diseases of the nervous system and hormonal system. The units for premature infants, newborns, pediatric intensive care and the division of pediatric surgery are also available for our small patients. The division of hematology/oncology provides care for blood-forming disorders and tumors, and the division of allergology treats patients with respiratory diseases.
3. Types of medical care and services
An emergency unit is available within the framework of our outpatient care, and all specialist practices are available within the institution. Specialist practices include the following: pediatric cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, diabetology, pediatric neurology, pediatric surgery, premature infant follow up care, nephrology and hematology/oncology. These practices are assisted with ultrasound, x-ray and laboratory examination rooms.
4. Data related to patient care
Our inpatient unit provides care for children from infancy to 18 years of age on 151 beds, and an additional 2 beds for renal replacement therapy and 6 beds for prolonged mechanical ventilation. Accommodation for mothers is provided in a hostel: we provide 12 beds in 7 rooms; 4 rooms have private bathrooms and occupants of 3 rooms can use a common bathroom. These are self-catering double rooms and are available free of charge. A fridge and microwave are also available for mothers.
5. Technology and development projects
Since 2007 the Department has been constantly expanding with special focus on the Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Unit, the Perinatal Intensive Centre, the Neonatal Intensive Centre and on the Pediatric Hema-Oncological Unit. During the spring of 2018 new endoscopes were given to the Division of Gastroenterology.
Treatment in the inpatient and outpatient units is facilitated by a routine clinical chemical laboratory, genetic, hematology laboratories, and laboratories for EEG, ECG, respiratory function, x-ray tests and ultrasound scan. Children are taken care of by psychologists and educational assistants in playgrounds and play areas built for this purpose and equipped with toys and a television.
