Medical specialties - General Surgery Division

Hernia surgery

  • Most operations we perform are surgical interventions for hernia repair including abdominal wall hernia, umbilical, inguinal, femoral or incisional hernias.  In these interventions we apply the most modern patient-friendly meshes and laparoscopic surgical techniques.

Gallbladder diseases and bile duct disorders

  • In 1993, we were among the first in Hungary to perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Laparoscopic surgeries, which are sometimes open surgeries involving the gallbladder or gallstones, have been carried out routinely ever since. Besides these, we also perform operations for benign or malignant tumors of the bile duct.

Removal of benign or malignant tumors of the stomach

  • We have been performing surgeries on benign or malignant lesions in the stomach for decades, and we are also considered to have had a major role in making laparoscopic diaphragm repair more widespread. In the past decades we have expanded the range of our interventions and have performed more surgeries on gastric tumors using laparoscopy, when possible. We are the only department in Hungary to provide computer-aided prognosis for gastric cancer as well as sentinel lymph node mapping.

Surgical solutions for diaphragmatic hernia and reflux disease

  • Our division has been providing laparoscopic solutions to patients with diaphragm disorders for more than 20 years. We perform a large number of anti-reflux surgeries and interventions to treat diaphragmatic hernia and esophageal achalasia.

The management of the surgical diseases of the liver and the pancreas

  • The Endoscopy Centre and the MR Diagnostic Unit of the Hospital provide such a professional background for the surgical treatment of the different diseases of the liver and the pancreas that is prominent in the whole region.

Small intestinal, colon and rectal surgery

  • The incidence of colon cancers has been rising dramatically in Hungary. Most of the surgeries we perform are related to the management of benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the small and large intestines. We carry out a large number of advanced laparoscopic interventions, and can make use of the most modern tissue dissecting and unifying instruments, transanal gelport, as well as a full HD laparoscopy tower.

The treatment of congenital disorders of the digestive system, cysts in the abdominal cavity, and diseases of the spleen

  • We have extensive experience in the minimally-invasive surgical treatment of the above listed rare diseases.

The diagnosis and surgical treatment of rectal problems

  • As per routine, we perform (possibly same-day) surgical interventions to treat hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulas and abscesses with the support provided by our gastroenterology and coloproctology specialists.

The surgical treatment of endocrine organs

  • In close cooperation with the endocrinology specialist consultation of the Internal Medicine Division we provide surgical treatment for overactive thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands, their tumors, as well as in case of some specific endocrine tumors. We can also perform intraoperative histological examinations and hormone level tests.

Mammary surgery

  • The breast cancer screening centre accepting the largest number of patients in Hungary also belongs to our Hospital. Our cooperation with the related specialist areas and all diagnostic and therapeutic units ensures significant support in the examination and complex treatment of patients suffering from breast cancer. Therefore, one of our key areas of specialization involves the provision of surgical interventions in benign and malignant tumors of the breast including oncoplastic breast conservation and reconstruction surgery. If necessary, we provide additional sentinel lymph node mapping, as well as intraoperative imaging and histology. At our division plastic surgery is also available, therefore patients can opt for both immediate or delayed reconstructive surgery.

Vascular surgery

  • Our Vascular Surgery Unit can provide care for more than 440,000 patients; besides, it is also an accredited vascular surgery training centre. The Unit performs reconstructive surgery on the aorta and peripheral vessels in the limbs, provides surgical treatment for carotid artery stenosis and venous diseases of the lower extremities, as well as emergency vascular surgery, and treats patients with vascular injuries after trauma.

24-hour management of abdominal injuries and emergency abdominal conditions

  • As we are a county hospital, this area of specialization includes a wide range of surgical interventions including the management of penetrating and blunt abdominal injuries, intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, cholecystitis, strangulated hernias, abscesses, gastrointestinal perforation, bleeding etc.

Ambulatory surgery

  • Removal of benign and malignant skin lesions, moles, connective tissue disorders (all interventions are supplemented with pathological examination), as well as the surgical treatment of nail disorders

Same-day surgery

  • The Same-day Surgical Centre of our Hospital provides treatment on 6 beds offering surgical solutions for inguinal and umbilical hernia, benign breast disorders, hemorrhoids and other anal disorders, venous diseases of the lower extremities, or pilonidal cysts, with admission and discharge possibly on the same day.
