The objective of outpatient units is to assess patients scheduled for elective surgeries; survey their medical history, evaluate their general condition prior to surgery, and determine their eligibility. In routine cases a pre-anesthetic consultation is arranged weeks before the actual time of the surgical intervention so that additional diagnostic tests and/or therapies, if any, can be performed in time and the surgery would not need to be rescheduled.
