Depending on the time of admission, patients waiting for an intervention are visited by the anesthesiologists on the day immediately before the surgery or in the morning of the day of the surgery. During this pre-operative visit, the patient will meet with the anesthesiologist, who will then be taking care of the patient during the intervention. At this point, the patient’s condition will be surveyed in order to exclude acute conditions that would necessitate delaying the intervention. The anesthesiologist will discuss with the patient how to take regular medication and also the anesthesia and anesthesia interventions that are to be employed during the surgery.
If a non-elective, emergency surgery is needed, and there is no chance for a check-up at the outpatient clinic, the necessary test for the surgery will be performed during the pre-operative anesthesia visit.
