Echocardiography is the ultrasound examination of the heart. The heart can be investigated by ultrasound through the chest wall, which a painless procedure with the patients lying on their left side using a gel to facilitate the pathway of the ultrasound. Measurements can be taken of the thickness of the cavities and the heart muscle, function of the heart muscles and the valves, blood flow can be depicted and estimations regarding intracardiac pressures can be made.

If the transthoracic ultrasound cannot provide an image with enough details, or one of the cavities or valves are not depicted appropriately, the heart may need to be examined through the esophagus. This examination is similar to the gastroscopy examination and is called transesophageal ultrasound. Similar to the exercise tolerance test, it is possible to follow by ultrasound the functioning of the heart under stress and the examination is called stress echocardiography.
