Introduction - Medical Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Clinic

Introduction of the Rehabilitation Clinic

The Clinic of Medical Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine of the University of Debrecen, Clinical Centre (shortly Rehabilitation Clinic) was established in 2006, initially as a department and faculty, and since 2018 it has been operating as a clinic. The institution underwent a fundamental transformation during the university integration process, as a result of which it moved from the Nagyerdei Campus to the Kenézy Gyula Campus, where a unified 110-bed inpatient and 18-bed daycare Rehabilitation Clinic was established in 2021. To meet the changing needs, it was possible to adjust the bed ratio of each profile. Our beds, which are accredited for specialist training, are currently used for the rehabilitation of patients with brain injury and trauma at the highest level of progression, and we also provide high-quality care for patients with chronic neurological, limb amputation, musculoskeletal and orthopaedic surgery in our general ward. In addition to inpatient care, we provide non-specialist (physiotherapy) services on two sites (Bethlen Street and Bartók Béla Road).

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

1. Patient flow data per year: On average, the clinic treats 1000 inpatients, 3000 outpatient medical specialist, 60000 non-specialist (physiotherapy, therapeutic gymnastics), 700 speech therapy, 200 day-care cases.

2. Specialised interventions (Spasticity Centre):

  • Ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin (botox) treatment for spasticity patients, Regional Spasticity Therapy and Education Centre.
  • Intrathecal balloon pump for spastic patients – filling, dose titration, monitoring.
  • Dysphagia (swallowing disorder) therapy.
  • Robot-assisted and Computer-controlled Interactive Therapy Centre from 2023 (lower and upper limb function and gait development (partly funded by the University of Debrecen from NRDI fund).

3. Summary of clinical activities

After the integration process, the number of beds and the care profile of the clinic were significantly changed. The clinic currently has 110 inpatient rehabilitation beds and 18 daycare places:

Main inpatient profiles from 1 July 2021:

  • Provision of primary care/acute/post-acute rehabilitation mainly for adults following stroke and other causes of severe brain injury or other serious neurological conditions; (Progressivity III, highly funded activity, regional centre) 38 beds
  • Specialised rehabilitation care for people with polytrauma (Progressivity level III, highly funded activity, regional centre) 15 beds
  • The basic rehabilitation activity is mainly programmed to meet the rehabilitation needs of people with degenerative arthritis, monotraumatic, systemic autoimmune diseases and other musculoskeletal problems or conditions (amputees, orthopaedic, abnormalities, etc.). (Progressivity level II) 57 beds
  • Fee-for-service health care services: full complex rehabilitation programmes for foreign citizens, planned and implemented according to their individual needs.

Our inpatient department at the Kenézy Campus currently has a 95 - 100% bed occupancy rate, while the outpatient turnover is 95% of the total annual budget on a monthly basis. The Clinic provides outpatient services seven days a week, using an electronic appointment booking system.  Physiotherapy outpatient care is provided on two sites (Bartók Béla Road and Bethlen Street) with an average waiting list of 3-4 weeks. Patients can be treated in a refurbished, air-conditioned surgery with enough space to try out assistive devices. A new, up-to-date IT system for non-specialist patient records (physiotherapy, individual therapeutic exercises) was introduced in 2023.

With the support of the Board of Trustees of the University of Debrecen, our clinic was able to provide air-conditioning for the service units, to provide shading for some of the wards and to renovate the lecture room.
