Introduction - Pulmonology Division

The Pulmonology Division of the Kenézy Gyula Teaching Hospital has been operating in its present form since January 1, 2016. Previously patients from Debrecen were provided care in the Lung Care Institute and the Lung Screening Institute of Debrecen, while the patients of the neighboring settlements were attended to by the physicians of the Pulmonology Department of the Kenézy Gyula Hospital, the Pulmonology Specialty Ambulatory Unit and the Bronchology Specialty Care Facility, the Lung Care Institute of Hajdú-Bihar County, and the Mobile Lung Screening Unit. The former Pulmonology Department formed an organic part of the Hospital, where nationally-recognized specialists provided care and teaching services. Several specialists working nowadays in different pulmonology institutions of the country were trained here or gained experience at this unit. All the staff working here were characterized by hard and dedicated work. The Lung Care Institute of Debrecen has a history of 105 years. It was the fight against tuberculosis that made its establishment necessary. This area has been present in the Institute ever since. However, today’s specialists need to meet the requirements of our modern age as well, which means dealing not only with tuberculosis but also the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory allergy, asthma, COPD diseases, respiratory tract infections and other pulmonary diseases. The specialized care offered by the Pulmonology Division of the University of Debrecen Kenézy Gyula Teaching Hospital is provided today in three specialized care units, where pulmonary care and lung care are provided to adult patients living in Debrecen or the neighboring settlements belonging to the area for which the hospital is required to provide care.
