Introduction - Surgery Clinic

1. History

The 1st Surgery Clinic located in the Auguszta Sanatorium became operational in 1921.  Then in 1923 it was moved to its new premises, a separate building on the new clinical site.

After the restructuring of the Surgical Department of the City Hospital, the 2nd Surgery Clinic opened in the academic year of 1950/1951. In 1953 it moved to the reconstructed building of the Nurse Training Institute located on the clinical site in the Great Forest.  It operated under the name of the 2nd Surgery Clinic starting from the 1973/1974 academic year. The Heart Surgery Clinic became a separate entity in 1996.

The separate Department of Operative Techniques started its operation in 1951, under the name of the Institute of Surgical Anatomy and Operative Techniques.

The Institute of Surgery was formed on the 1st July, 2006, after the 1st and 2nd Surgery Clinics (operating in separate buildings) were merged and the Department of Operative Techniques was annexed to them.

As we are one of the largest institutes of Hungary, founded more than a century ago, our mission is to always act as pioneers in the field of patient care and the diverse areas of teaching and research.

Within the field of general surgery, our key areas of specialization include the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases (stomach, colon, liver, pancreatic diseases), providing care for the surgical diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid, as well as breast, gallbladder, and hernia surgery.

Vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, and kidney transplantation are some of our special areas of care.

4. Data related to patient care

The Surgery Clinic at the Clinical Centre is one of the largest institutes of surgery in Hungary offering the widest range of procedures. Currently, we treat patients on 121 beds with 40 physicians working at the Clinic. With the medical supervision of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, we treat patients on an additional 18 postoperative intensive care beds.

We perform more than 5,000 surgeries a year and see patients at eight different outpatient specialist practices every day. Our patient satisfaction indicators have reflected a 90-95 % positive experience in recent years.

5. Technology and development projects

The Clinic is located in the beautiful Great Forest in a new and modern building inaugurated in 2006 as part of the Auguszta project. The building is partially air-conditioned and uses facilities of a high European standard. We find it important to constantly develop our assets and operative techniques so as to meet today’s requirements and embrace new technologies as much as possible.
