The structure of our clinic
Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology Clinic deals with the surgical care of the soft parts of the face, facial bones, the anatomical formulas and organs of the surrounding region and pathological changes in the oral cavity. We perform our tasks in cooperative work with the specialists of the dentoalveolar surgery. It is necessary to discuss these two disciplines together in connection with the presentation of our clinic and our specialty.
In Debrecen, the Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology Clinic provides patient care in the field of oro-maxillofacial surgery and stomatology. Our clinic operates as an independent organizational unit of the Clinical Centre which is currently located in the bulding of the Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery. Some of the oral surgery procedures (with the classical meaning), such as dental surgery, are done at our clinic. However, patients, who need this kind of care, are treated at the Department of Dentoalveolar Surgery which belongs to the organizational unit of the Faculty of Dentistry and located in the building of Faculty of Dentistry.
Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology Clinic also deals with trauma surgery of the face and skull, tumor surgery, surgery of developmental disorders and surgery of the large salivary glands and jaw joint disease. In some countries, the competence of cranio-maxillofacial surgery is to surgically treat pathological lesions of the skull. In addition to the maxillofacial surgery care in north-eastern Hungary, our clinic participates in the initial training of dental students, medical students, as well as in the postgraduate training of dentists, facial and oral surgeons, residents and specialist medical candidates.
Dentoalveolar Surgery Department is not directly under the UDCC, but part of the Faculty of Dentistry within the UDCC. This department provides the theoretical exams and their education of dentistry students in the year IV and V. Scientific works and the coordination of scientific student researches in connection with the oro-maxillofacial surgery are also done by this department.
Most of the oral surgery tasks (with the classical meaning) are done by the Dentoalveolar Surgery Department which is located in the Faculty of Dentistry within the UDCC. This includes the dental care, education of dentistry students, theoretical and practical exams of dentistry students in the year III, oral surgery residents and oro-maxillofacial surgery residents and providing elements of oral surgery training. The coordination of the scientific works and scientific student researches in connection with the dentoalveolar surgery are done by the Dentoalveolar Surgery Department.
The training of the oro-maxillofacial surgery and stomatology is based on the general medicine degree in Hungary and after this 6 years they become residents of the maxillofacial surgery and then the specialists of the oro-maxillofacial surgery and stomatology. In some countries this specialty requires a digree in general dentistry. The dentoalveolar surgery is based on a digree in dentistry which requires 3 years of professional training to pass the exam.
Our specialization, oro-maxillofacial surgery and stomatology, is a kind of multidisciplinary node. We regularly work with the medical and dental disciplines in cooperative work.
