As part of a surgical counsel the lead duty doctor examines patients who are inpatients at another clinic and if appropriate, will transfer the patient internally to this ward.
Patients may be admitted via the emergency ward, where they are examined and directed to our ward.
Patients may arrive with outpatient files, or with referrals addressed to our ward.
They may arrive with a referral from their GP, or with abdominal complaints without referrals.
Except for the first case the outpatient doctor examines the patient and decides on a further course of action (admission, direct to other units, schedule for a check-up examination, discharge for home). If the duty doctor is a resident doctor, a decision must be made after prior consultation with the specialist.
