What is the difference between out-of-hours GP services and emergency care?

EMERGENCY CARE

In case of conditions that require immediate medical attention and may even become life-threatening without urgent intervention, the emergency care services or the ambulance service should be called. Contacting the emergency care units of the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen is recommended only in case of a sudden onset of a condition that progressively worsens.

In case of a medical emergency, please call the National Ambulance Service at 112.

Waiting in emergency care (including ambulance, medical on-call service and the emergency departments as well) is significantly influenced by their use with non-emergency cases. If one uses emergency care instead of general practitioners or organised specialty clinics with non-acute symptoms (disease of multiple days or weeks without deterioration), it significantly increases waiting time. It may also occur that waiting time in an emergency department is longer than at the general practitioner or specialty clinics.

In case of health problems lasting for weeks and where the condition is not deteriorating, it is better to wait for tomorrow and visit your general practitioner or an outpatient clinic. It is better also for the forgetful and they help other patients as well if they do not use the emergency service to urgently replace their medications for their chronic diseases, but they ask for the prescription from their general practitioner.

In the case of conditions requiring emergency care the symptoms:

  • start suddenly (trauma, poisoning, cardiac arrhythmia, cardiovascular disorders, cerebral circulation disorders, thermal traumas, electric shock, accidents in water, acute chest disasters)
  • have a rapid course (minutes, hours)
  • the deterioration of the condition is clearly visible and rapid
  • significance of time, the “golden hours” of the patient - visible and perceivable deterioration of the condition within a short time

However, going to the closest emergency care facility in case of the following symptoms might save lives:

  • dyspnea, chest pain
  • bleeding, sudden inability to move or to speak, loss of sensation of limbs
  • sudden inability to move or speak, loosing sensation in the legs or in the arms
  • collapse, intoxication, allergic reaction
  • hemoptysis, hematemesis, sustained vomiting or diarrhea
  • changes in the mental state, disturbed or unusual behavior, suicidal thoughts
  • suddenly appearing headache of a strength never experienced before, visual disturbance
  • scar requiring care, burns
  • broken bone, head injury, sudden arthralgia
  • persistent dizziness, weakness
  • permanent, incurable pain
  • fast, irregular feeling of heartbeat
  • heart rate below 40/minute with weakness, dizziness, change in the level of consciousness, feeling of collapse and loss of consciousness.

EMERGENCY SERVICE IN PRIMARY CARE (for the citizens of Debrecen)

Patients are encouraged to turn to the out-of-hours services with complaints with which they would otherwise visit their GPs. These conditions are NOT acute, do NOT require emergency care, and are NOT life-threatening. This means that outside of the consulting hours of your GP, with problems you would otherwise visit them - sich as an urgent request for prescription, fever, throat pain etc. - you should turn to the out-of-hours GP services.

On February 1, 2023, the new duty system was first launched in the county of Hajdú-Bihar, which will be gradually introduced throughout the country. The aim of the transformation is to ensure that the system providing better care than before and connected to the elements of the emergency care system operates.

Out-of-hours GP services for adults living in Debrecen are still provided in the building of the Department of Emergency Medicine of the Clinical Centre, the room of out-of-hours GP services can be accessed directly from the main entrance.
