Patients of the region are admitted as emergency care patients even without a referral 24/7.The first examination by the doctor is performed after the triage assessment. Patients are prioritized based on their condition and clinical signs and assigned either to the urgent or delayable care categories which forms the basis for the order in which they will be seen. An advantage of this system is that patients with serious conditions receive medical attention without delay. When the unit becomes overloaded, it is inevitable that those whose care can safely be delayed or who can be treated successfully in the primary care system will have to wait. In the near future plans call for the establishment of two ambulatory units operating in parallel so that wait time may be reduced significantly.
